Excerpt from a 1 February 2012 article titled “Citizens Speak out about Comp Plan”:

It looked as those in favor of Chesterfield County’s new draft countywide comprehensive plan stayed home last Wednesday when the Board of Supervisors listened to comments during a public hearing.

Over 30 citizens took to the podium to express their opinion of the draft plan that has cost more than a $1 million to produce and has taken three years to wind its way to Chesterfield’s Board of Supervisors. Only a few speakers expressed total support of the draft plan. One speaker focused on transportation; mostly public transportation routes.

…

Many of the speakers expressed their concern for the plan because of their opinion that the comprehensive plan is part of a wider effort called Agenda 21.

Agenda 21 is an action plan of the United Nations related to sustainable development and was an outcome of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in 1992. It is a comprehensive blueprint of action to be taken in every area in which humans directly affect the environment.

Area Tea Party groups have begun to speak out on their opposition to sustainable development, environment and property rights.

From the desk of Senator Mark Obenshain

ACTION ALERT: Opponents Planning
Assault on Property Rights Amendment

Please Contact Your Senator Immediately to Insist on a Vote
for the Property Rights Amendment (Obenshain’s SJ 3)!

I don’t write often to ask for help, but I need it now!!! We have been fighting for a Property Rights Amendment to Virginia’s Constitution for 6 years – and we are on the cusp of sending one to the voters for approval. However, all that is at risk. Without your help, the Amendment may die on Friday or Monday.

First, let me explain what’s going on, and then I am going to ask you to help by sending an email to your Senator as soon as you can — tonight if possible.

To pass a constitutional amendment, it must be approved by the General Assembly twice in succeeding years and in exactly the same form. Then the amendment must be approved at the ballot box by the voters.

Last year, the Property Rights Amendment passed with HUGE bipartisan majorities (the fact that it was an election year no doubt helped). This year, the amendment sailed out of a Senate Committee with a bipartisan 13-2 vote – with all eight Republicans and five of the committee’s seven Democrats in support. As things now stand, the full Senate should vote on the amendment on Monday, and if it passes the House, it goes straight to the voters in November.

Unfortunately, opponents of the Property Rights Amendment have one more play: they want to send the amendment to the Senate Finance Committee — WHERE IT WILL DIE. Let me be clear, if SJ 3 is recommitted to Senate Finance, we will never see it again.

Now, HERE’S WHAT YOU CAN DO. I need you to contact your Senator and tell him or her to VOTE NO on any motion to send the Property Rights Amendment to the Senate Finance Committee. Our property rights are way too important.

If opponents want to kill the Amendment, let them do it in the light of day – it’s easy. If the effort to send the Property Rights Amendment to the Finance Committee fails, then on Monday the Senate as a whole will get an up or down vote on the measure. Last year 35 Senators voted for the amendment. If they voted for it in an election year, is it too much to ask them to do it now?

To help you contact your Senator, I’ve created a form that will help you get out your message. Click here to let your Senator know that you expect SJ 3 to get an up or down floor vote.

Thank you for your help and support on this critically important issue! Please don’t wait – contact your Senator now, and forward this email to others who may be interested in doing likewise. (If you would rather call, please do so before 10 am on Friday; click here for a list of phone numbers.)

Best regards,

Mark Obenshain

Sixteen leaders of the scientific and technical communities have signed a statement in the Wall Street Journal condemning the man-made climate-change movement as nothing but an enterprise to increase the wealth and power of its leaders.

Their statement is timely in view of the fact that most voters still believe in man-caused global warming despite the accumulating evidence that it’s a hoax. As pollster Scott Rasmussen reported earlier this month: “Belief that global warming is a serious problem is at its highest level in two-and-half-years…. (A) survey of likely voters finds that 64% say global warming is at least a somewhat serious problem, including 30% who say it’s very serious.”

The signers of the statement refuting the hoax wrote in part:

Why is there so much passion about global warming?…. There are several reasons, but a good place to start is the old question ‘cui bono?’ Or the modern update, ‘Follow the money.’ Alarmism over climate is of great benefit to many, providing government funding for academic research and a reason for government bureaucracies to grow. Alarmism also offers an excuse for governments to raise taxes, taxpayer-funded subsidies for businesses that understand how to work the political system, and a lure for big donations to charitable foundations promising to save the planet….

(T)he oft-repeated claim that nearly all scientists demand that something dramatic be done to stop global warming is not true. In fact, a large and growing number of distinguished scientists and engineers do not agree that drastic actions on global warming are needed…. The reason is a collection of stubborn scientific facts. Perhaps the most inconvenient fact is the lack of global warming for well over 10 years now….

Although the number of publicly dissenting scientists is growing, many young scientists furtively say that while they also have serious doubts about the global-warming message, they are afraid to speak up for fear of not being promoted—or worse….

Speaking for many scientists and engineers who have looked carefully and independently at the science of climate, we have a message to any candidate for public office: There is no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to ‘decarbonize’ the world’s economy…

Every candidate should support rational measures to protect and improve our environment, but it makes no sense at all to back expensive programs that divert resources from real needs and are based on alarming but untenable claims of ‘incontrovertible’ evidence.

A milestone was met yesterday: The US Senate has gone 1000 days without issuing a budget.

Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in 70 days. The Empire State Building was built in 410 days. Numerous other feats were accomplished in 1000 days or less.

Step 1: Armageddon!

In a speech in <del datetime="2012-01-24T13:20:26+00:00">Washington</del> Berlin, <del datetime="2012-01-24T13:20:26+00:00">Treasury Secretary Paulson</del> Lagarde warned that the <del datetime="2012-01-24T13:20:26+00:00">US</del> world economy was on the brink of <del datetime="2012-01-25T12:52:15+00:00">tanks in the streets</del> a “defining moment”, adding:

It is not about saving any one country or region. It is about saving the world from a downward economic spiral.

How is that any different from this, which we were treated to during the $700 Billion TARP robbery:

If you continue reading the linked article above, at the link just below the quoted part, you’ll see that Ms. Lagarde, after reprising Hank Paulson’s asteroids-striking-earth speech (imitation being the sincerest form of flattery), you’ll note that the “European Stability Mechanism” (ESM) is supposed to be no more than 500 Billion Euro, and that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently began lobbying for an additional 500 Billion Euro (much of which is to come from the U.S., and by that I mean “U.S. Taxpayer”). Later, reports began circulating of Ms. Lagarde claiming she had not called for doubling the ESM.

Which brings us to…

Step 2: The jawbone of an ass (beard optional): for awhile, you can actually prevent an outright collapse by promising to backstop everything, while totally confusing everyone. Since you are backstopping everything, and since the purpose of your backstops is to support prices, all markets (stocks, bonds, housing, consumer spending, etc) and all prices depend on your continued support. No one (except yourself and the people on your “friends and family list”) knows when you will stop your support of any individual market. What is anything truly worth? How can capital markets function without real prices? Build a factory? You’d have to be insane, unless you’re doing it with taxpayer money. Since you are a major central banker and you have arrogated unto yourself total economic power, you can say and do any damned thing you want to, and the only thing the poor suckers in the markets can do is try to figure out what you mean and invest their capital accordingly. You can initiate QE (markets up!) while talking about how your intervention will be unwound (markets down!); you can promise to keep short term interest rates at historic lows “for the foreseeable future” (credibly threatening to expand your balance sheet) while using operation twist to sell the short term end of the market and lower long term rates, while not actually expanding your balance sheet. Who’s going to do anything about it? Certainly not the Congress!

Fed set to push back timing of eventual rate hike

(Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Reserve looks set to keep monetary policy on hold on Wednesday, even as it releases forecasts expected to show interest rates will be near zero for at least two more years.

Step 3: Alphabet Soup! The real beauty of monetarism / central banking is that you can have fun stealing other people’s money while pretending to help them! Alan Greenspan made famous the technique of giving testimony to Congress using such arcane language that virtually no one in Congress understood him (well, to be fair, they WERE congressmen…). During a crisis, it is remarkably important to ramp up the rhetoric to ensure that the busy worker bees don’t have time to figure out what the hell you’re saying and, besides, what better way to belittle him? Think of the cocktail conversations at Davos!

Fed Programs used during the 08-09 crisis:

Single tranche OMO Program
Term Discount Window Program
Term Auction Facility (TAF)
Term Securities Lending Facility TSLF)
Primary Dealer Credit Facility (PDCF)
Term Securities Lending Facility Options Program (TSLFOP)
Asset-Backed Commercial Paper Money Market Fund Liquidity Facility (!)
Transitional Credit Extensions (TCF)
Commercial Paper Funding Facility (CPFF)
Money Market Investor Funding Facility (MMIFF)
Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TABSLF)

So far, the European Central Bank has initiated these facilities:

European Stability Mechanism (ESM)
European Financial Stability Fund (ESFS)
Long Term Refinancing Operation (LTRO)

Better get busy, Ms. Lagarde! The German public still knows what you’re up to! How do you say “Tea Party” auf Deutsche?
